C-Pulse heart turbocharger
New Scientist reports on the first patient to be implanted with a C-Pulse, a device designed to “turbocharge” theheart of patients with moderate heart failure, but who do not need a heart transplant or an artificial heart. TheC-Pulse consists of an inflatable polyurethane balloon that is pressed against the aorta and kept in place by apolyester wrap stitched around the vessel, and a processor and battery worn by the patient. His name has been roundly cursed in foxholes by generations of terrified infantrymen. His legacy was the millions who died with white-hot fragments of metal blasted into them. To many of them he wasnt even a person, just a feared and loathed word; worse than a bullet, much worse than bayonet - shrapnel. Like the men behind more innocent inventions - Biro, Diesel - Colonel Henry Shrapnels name transcended its owner, losing its capital S and becoming immortalised as part of wars international language. FDA Rejects Artificial Heart
Mad_Rain writes "Those people who fear cyborgs can rest easy. The Food and Drug Administration voted to reject Abiomed's request to sell artificial hearts to people who have suffered heart failure and exhausted their treatment options. The FDA stated that there was too little gain with too many adverse side effects in the limited trial run (17 people underwent the procedure). Although this isn't quite the same product mentioned in previous Slashdot coverage, it does seem like a setback towards replacing failing organs with fully artificial ones."
